A new report from Pew (see below) documents the dramatic rise in the use of social media and that most are satisfied by the experience.
If 50 percent (and growing) of all Americans are comfortable with an on-line social experience, then the desire to create personal websites is here.
Facebook is no substitute for your own website where you control everything. Your own site creates a base for everything you do on the Internet. It becomes your 24-hour personal representative. You can customize it in any way you choose without restrictions imposed by Facebook or any other platform.
Most who want their life stories told online are older individuals. There are some age differences when it comes to comfort with expressing thoughts online. 83 percent of those 18-29 are using social media sites, far more that older individuals (33 percent for those 65 or older).
But there are a variety of indicators stating that older individuals (50+) are using the Internet and social media in increasing numbers (higher percentage growth than younger groups). It’s simply a matter of time before older individuals become a major presence (dominant?) on the Internet. Note that tablet sales are dominated by older audiences.
When it comes to race, income, education and location there are differences but they are slight.
Summary of Pew Report:
Two-thirds of adult Internet users (65%) now say they use a social networking site like MySpace, Facebook or LinkedIn, up from 61% one year ago. That’s more than double the percentage that reported social networking site usage in 2008 (29%).
For the first time in Pew Internet surveys it means that half of all adults (50%) use social networking sites. The pace with which new users have flocked to social networking sites has been staggering; when we first asked about social networking sites in February of 2005, just 8% of internet users – or 5% of all adults – said they used them.
