When I talk to people about telling their life stories, they think in terms of current generations of friends and family.
But when I ask about my family history, the people I’m often interested in existed in the past. We create personal or family histories for people in our current and future lives.
Being online through makes you immortal. You live forever. But that life only carries significance if people can find you and in today’s world that means being available through the Internet via your own website.
What About Facebook?
Facebook and every social media site can end tomorrow. The internet is littered with endless examples of digital powerhouses that are declining or in the process of dying.
The only way you live forever is through your own website.
The Web of the Future:
Take younger family members and associates into consideration. They live in an online world.
Research from Pew indicates that, “Social media use has become so pervasive in the lives of American teens that having a presence on a social network site is almost synonymous with being online. Fully 95% of all teens ages 12-17 are now online and 80% of those online teens are users of social media sites.”
There is additional (newer) data indicating that the majority of all Americans, regardless of age, are now using social media sites.
The research illustrates that being online and being influenced by the digital experience is and will forever be part of the lives of all Americans at some point.
It’s one thing to suggest that the bulk of Americans are involved in the digital world. It will be an entirely different experience when everyone spends significant amounts of their day on the internet.
If You Want to be Remembered:
If you want to be remembered, if you want to influence current and future generations, if you want to tell your story in the way you want it told you need to have your own website and establish your presence online.
